JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 3: Naomh Padraig Uisce Chaoin vs Moville GAA

It was a double header for Moville fans in Muff this evening, the reserve team having been beaten by Lifford GAA in the 6pm throw in. The boys battled well in this Junior B championship game but unfortunately came out second best to a strong Lifford team.

The Senior Moville men had a throw in at 7.30pm, with Sean O’Hare taking over managerial duties for this important game; the Moville men having won both of their previous games against Letterkenny Gaels and Lifford. The heat of the previous day was s distant memory as the players and a good number of fans travelled to Muff for this encounter in near perfect playing conditions.

Muff were off the mark first scoring points in the 2nd and 6th minute of the game (#12 first…I think, but #14 definitely got the second!). Malachy McDermott turned his marker in the 8th minute and raised the green flag to put Moville a point ahead with a brilliant goal. Danny Murphy raised the green flag again within two minutes leaving the Muff keeper gathering the ball out of his net again after some great build up play. Muff #26 scored an excellent 45 in the 16th minute and this was followed by a point from their #12 two minutes later; this would be their fourth and last scores of the first half. John McGeady scored 2 points from frees in the 19th and 24th minutes of the game; closely followed by Maurice Harkin who took his point well in the 25th minute bisecting the uprights. Danny Murphy rounded off the scoring in the first half with a point in the 28th minute.

Moville came out in the second half and scored two quick but well taken points, James Henry sprinted up from defence to score in the 31st minute and Nigel McMonagle scored a well deserved point 2 minutes later. Muff regrouped and scored four points without reply. #8 scored in the 4th minute of the second half, #12 scored in the 13th minute, #26 scored a free from close range in the 14th minute and #26 added to his tally a minute later. Seamus Hegarty made his way up from defence to score a brilliant point in the 16th minute. #28 for Muff scored another close range free in the 17th minute and Muff scored again in the 19th minute. What followed was a great disciplined display from the Moville team, they held the ball well and passed it around the midfield and defence, always retaining possession and protecting their lead. John McGeady got his third point of the game with a free in the 25th minute and Moville played with most of the possession, and contained Muff until the final whistle in what was a mature and disciplined second half.

Moville will be hoping to carry this momentum through into their next Championship group game against Convoy with the date of that fixture to be confirmed as yet.

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP SECOND LEG: Moville vs Convoy

Another Saturday evening game and again the conditions were close to perfect. Strong sunshine and a slight cooling breeze with the Convoy pitch, the envy of every club, looking like a snooker table. This game was to be a very close encounter and the Home team seemed to be on top of things in the first half. Pointe for Moville came from Danny Murphy, Malachy McDermott (2), Oran McDermott (2) and Seamus Hegarty. Convoy nabbed a goal from an unusual defensive mistake by Moville on the 28th minute to leave the half time score: Conmhaigh 1-06 Bun an Phobail 0-06. The Moville men were on a two match winning streak and needed to make it three in a row today to force a play-off and remain in the Championship having been beaten by Convoy in Carrick field in May.

Ciaran Diver got the second half scoring started with a point in the 4th minute with Convoy pointing on the 5th and 9th minutes. There then followed a period of good passing football involving Seamus Hegarty and Nigel McMonagle and finishing with Danny Murphy putting the ball in the back of the Convoy net. Nigel McMonagle got a point on the 12th minute to level the score. Convoy got three more points without reply to leave three points in it with seven minutes to play. Moville rallied though and four points came from the boots of Nigel McMonagle, John McGeady and Ciaran Moore. Moville were one ahead with a minute to go, and they rode their luck in the dying seconds with Convoy hitting the underside of the crossbar but luckily Tom Houston cleared his lines. Final score Conmhaigh 1-11 Bun an Phobail 1-12. The play off will take place on Saturday 22nd June, venue and times are to be confirmed.

DIVISION 4 LEAGUE: Moville vs Muff

Moville continued their winning run with a comfortable victory over Muff last night at the Carrick Field. Muff opened the brighter with points in the 2nd and 6th minutes. However Moville settled shortly afterwards as Connor Doherty swung over a point off the ground from the sideline in the 9th minute. Oran Mc Dermott added another in 11th minute before Doherty repeated the trick on the 14th minute to give Moville the lead. Ciaran Diver got on the score sheet in the 18th minute from 35m and Danny Murphy added another less than a minute later. Oran Mc Dermott was hauled to the ground in the square in the 20th minute and stepped up to blast the resulting penalty home to give Moville a1-05 to 0-02 lead. Enda Faulkner added the final score of the half in the 25th minute.

The second half opened with Muff launching long ball into the Moville square which resulted a goal and a point in the opening 6 minutes. Connor Doherty pointed from a 45 in the 8th minute.  Two minutes later Ciaran Moore won a  kickout and ran through the Muff defence; he appeared to be fouled but the referee, Hugo Wallace, played advantage and Moore bundled the ball over the line to raise the green flag. In the 14th Minute, Moore exquisitely fielded a kickout at full stretch before laying off to the supporting Seamus Hegarty who stoked the ball over the bar. Muff picked off 3 consecitutive points to narrow the gap, but points from Nigel Mc Monagle in the 22nd and 29th minutes which were separated by a point from Tony Mc Clennaghan in the 23rd to give Movile an 8 point  lead with a few minutes to play. In the closing minute Moville took their eye off the ball and Muff scored 2 goals in the 29th and 30th min to narrow the gap to 2 but Moville held on secure a valuable win leaving the final score, Moville 2-11- Muff 3-06

Referee Watch- Booked Oran Mc Dermott for tripping and rightly so in the first half but missed the punishment he had received on at least 3 separate occasions beforehand. That aside he was consistent throughout and relatively unnoticed

Turning point – Mc Dermott’s penalty two thirds way through 1st half left clear daylight between the teams and Moville never looking like losing after that

Player of the match- A day for the young ‘uns.  Michael Brendan Doherty was dominant at full back, but Declan Logue mopped up time and time again and was superb. Ciaran Moore and Enda Faulkner were strong down the middle. Ciaran Diver improves with every game and Tony Mc Clennaghan took his chance when he came on. Nigel Mc Monagle’s movement is a defenders nightmare but POTM goes to Connor Doherty. No fear when it comes to having a go and the quality of his 3 scores yesterday were simply sublime.

In the reserve game, Moville picked up their first win of the season.  With a blend of young and not so young, Moville stuck at their task yesterday and won and entertaining game with the final kick of the game. With the Junior B championship coming up shortly, this should help build confidence, and if Moville can continue were they left off, they just might be dark horses for the Championship.
